Carmel and Thom Gregg

Laura and I recently had dinner in Carmel, which is one of the truly ritzy towns in northern California. I doubt you can touch any property in Carmel for under a mil, and the town is located adjacent to Pebble Beach and 17 Mile Drive, where all of the THIRTY(!) mil houses live.

Our favorite jeweler in the world and the maker of our wedding rings, Thom Gregg, lives and works in Carmel. Our wedding rings are platinum bands with interpreted tribal symbols for air and water etched in a continuous pattern around the outside. We spent months iterating with Thom on the pattern, and he patiently created sample ring after sample ring from silver for us to determine the ideal size, weight and design for our rings. Thom has since been our “go to” artist for creative, elegant jewelry designs for special events in our lives. Thom even designed silver medallions for each of our four children that include the same air and water symbology as used on our rings. We took family vows when Laura and I married, and each of the kids has their medallion commemorating that event. Actually, although a different story, Laura and I each have tattoos with the same symbol!

One of the interesting things about Carmel, in addition to the plethora of art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, is that there are NO street numbers anywhere in the town of Carmel! For example, Thom’s address is “Dolores and 6th”, which is easy for him since he’s right on the corner. But Bouchée, where we had dinner recently, has the address of “Mission, between Ocean and 7th”. You gotta do some walking and watching in this town to know where you are going!
