Cabo Wabo

Cabo Wabo

A month or so ago, we took a weekend and blasted off to Los Cabos (“the capes”) in Mexico! From the SF Bay Area, Cabo is a direct flight that takes about two and half hours, not much different than traveling to Denver. We arrived at the beginning of the hurricane season, but luck was with us and the weather was perfect.

Laura and I are partial to both the ocean and the tropics so we expected to like Cabo and weren’t disappointed. The towns of Cabo San Jose and Cabo San Lucas book-end a twenty-mile long strip of coastline that is dotted with high-end resorts. I was surprised at how desert-like the baja peninsula actually is, but the resorts cling to the coastline and each creates its own version of a tropical shang-gri-la.

We spent our days at the Marquis Los Cabos hotel laying by the infinity edge pool, looking out over the ocean, and sipping away at margaritas and eating ceviche! Our troubles were definitely a long ways away! We tried two of the restaurants at the hotel, and Canto del Mar in particular yielded world-class fine dining in a private setting of just a few tables.

Of course, no trip to Mexico is complete without buying some jewelry and souvenirs, but once we got that out of our system in Cabo San Jose, it was off to Sammy Hagar’s bar & party place, Cabo Wabo in Cabo San Lucas! Cabo Wabo is packed with Sammy Hagar and Van Halen memorabilia, and apparently Sammy religiously celebrates his birthday every year at the club and pops in and out unannounced. No Sammy the night we were there, but there was a pretty marginal cover band, which we listened to while drinking pretty marginal margaritas. But, I did buy a pretty cool T-Shirt.
